The night before Thanksgiving I upgraded my iPad to the 4.2 iOS software and noticed the next morning to my horror that iMean no longer worked! Whenever my son would press a key the program simply quit!

Richie (the programmer) went to work on it right after Thanksgiving Dinner. It turned out to be a problem with the way the new OS deals with empty strings, and the new version of iMean was ready by evening. Friday morning I uploaded it to the app store where it is awaiting approval. I hope it will be soon!!

--Michael

First impressions

The iPad arrived yesterday as promised and the app loaded perfectly and works perfectly (whew)! It’s completely stable... we’ve been using it now for almost 24 hours without a crash or mishap. It works, dare I say it, just as an Apple app should -- it just works. You take it for granted after a very short while. There’s plenty of room to improve the app (why, in the dictionary, are words that are always capitalized in English (like tuesday) rendered without their initial capital? ...Should the button that switches to the numeric view be so close to the left margin? When Dan holds the iPad himself he can’t hold it there or he tends to get stuck changing to numeric view and back over and over, just to enjoy watching it. Maybe I should just let him do that a lot, it can’t be interesting forever... ) so lots of room for thought and improvement, but the app as is works wonderfully and will retire all our other communications gadgets, whether expensive and computerized or cheap and cardboard.

The iPad itself is a gem. Smaller than I had thought it would be (do we need to make the backspace key larger?) it’s incredibly easy to carry around, it’s very light and the battery really does run all day.

Thanks to Aram Julhakyan of Zenbrains.com we now have word prediction in iMean!

It wasn’t quite working in the version we submitted on March 27, the deadline for apps that want to be included in the iPad launch, but it’s ready now. A free update for anyone who gets the app, as soon as Apple approves it.
